What we do

ARRA (Artist Right and Royalties Association), is a nonprofit organization devoted to the protection and promotion of visual artists’ rights and royalties. Through our lobbying efforts we ensure human generated artwork is protected and recognizable. Through our registration program we allow artists to receive royalties for their artwork in perpetuity

We have created a voluntary registration platform for artists,  galleries, and collectors that provides Digital Certificates of Ownership (DCO) for physical art pieces, and collects royalties for artists when their artwork sells in the secondary market.

The ARRA process

Artist and Gallery Registration

Artists, galleries, and collectors must apply for membership through the ARRA website and verify their professional status. There is NO COST or fee for membership. Only verified members can register their physical artwork in the ARRA database.

Art Registration

When verified artists register their physical artwork to our database, they are documenting a claim of origination and ownership on that art piece. The artist receives an ARRA Digital Certificate of Ownership (DCO) which logs the artwork permanently into the ARRA database, establishing a record of ownership and value. Registering apiece does not require a sale or impending sale.

Art Transfer of Ownership from Artist or Gallery to Collector

When the artist or gallery sells the artist’s original artwork, the official ARRA certification is digitally transferred from the artist to the buyer, free of charge. The transfer of ownership is reflected in the ARRA database, and additional information is archived, such as the art’s condition and selling price.

Art Transfer of Ownership from Collector to Second Collector and Beyond (2nd+ Sale)

If the buyer chooses to sell the artwork, they then transfer the ARRA certification to the new owner. If the new owner wants to complete the registration and have the art registered in their name, they pay a royalty fee to the artist based on the sale price.

Art Transfer of Ownership from Artist or Gallery to Collector (1st Sale)

When the artist or gallery sells the artist’s original artwork, the new buyer may register as the piece’s registered owner, free of charge. This process is voluntary and does not impact the sale or sales process.

When the registered owner chooses to sell the artwork, if the new buyer wants to have the registration transferred into their name (similar to a transferring a vehicle registration), they will pay a royalty fee to the artist based on the sale price.
